Former Murai Family's Residence (Chorakukan) to a National Important Cultural Property

 
Thank you for your continued patronage of Chorakukan.
After deliberation and resolution by the Cultural Properties Subcommittee of the Council for Cultural Affairs held on Friday, October 18, 2024,
The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology reported that the "Former Murai Family Residence (Chorakukan)" (completed in 1909) would be designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

Currently, the "Former Murai Family Residence (Chorakukan)" is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Kyoto City, but will be designated as a "National Important Cultural Property" after the official gazette notification.

Chorakukan Corporation respectfully accepts this designation as an important cultural property and will work with the government and experts,
We will continue to utilize this valuable Western-style building built by Kyoto industrialist Kichihei Murai as a hotel,
We will communicate its historical and cultural value to visitors.
By balancing use and preservation, the former Murai family villa (Chorakukan) will be passed on as a cultural heritage for many years to come,
We will continue to make further efforts to preserve the building with the aim that its value will be widely communicated.
