Stay Plan Commemorating Designation as Important Cultural Property - Former Murai Villa and Hieizan Enryakuji Daishoin Tour & Private Tour of Sohonzan Chion-in Temple

Special Event Commemorating the Designation of Chorakukan as an Important Cultural Property: "The Story of the 115th Anniversary, Vol. 2"

Chorakukan, a villa in Kyoto (designed by James Gardiner) that welcomed distinguished guests from Japan and abroad during the Meiji era, and
This stay plan includes a visit to two residences of Kyoto businessman Kichihei Murai, whose main residence "Daishoin" (designed by Goichi Takeda) was moved from Akasaka Sannodai in Tokyo to the Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, and two ancient temples: Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, the head temple of the Tendai sect, and Chion-in, the head temple of the Jodo sect.
We are pleased to offer a special museum tour of Chorakukan to commemorate its designation as an Important Cultural Property.
In this special tour, Mr. Chigira Chiki of the Kyoto City Cultural Properties Protection Division, who conducted the survey when the building was designated as an Important Cultural Property, will explain the architectural features of the building.

~Private Tour of Former Murai Villa, Hieizan Enryakuji Temple Grand Shoin and Chion-in, the head temple of Hieizan Enryakuji Temple

  • 2 persons per room per night from 220,000 yen
  • The above rates are for double occupancy per room per night and include dinner and breakfast (service charge and consumption tax included).
     An additional accommodation tax of ¥1,000 per person will be charged.
  • *Includes lodging at Hotel Chorakukan (2 meals per night for 2 persons), lunch on the day of visit, round-trip cab fare to Mt. Hiei, and various entrance fees.
  • The minimum number of participants is 6 for each day.

Hieizan Enryakuji Temple "Daishoin" (usually closed to the public)

  • A purely Japanese-style structure built mainly of Kiso cypress, in which Kibei Murai invested his vast wealth.
    It was built in 1919 in Akasaka Sannodai, Tokyo as "Sannoso," the main residence of Kichihei Murai,
    In the fall of 1928, it was moved to Enryakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei as a commemorative project for the Emperor Showa's Grand Enthronement and the 1,150th anniversary of the founding of Mt.
    Today, it boasts of its grandeur as the "Daishoin," a guest house that welcomes special guests of Enryakuji Temple.

Chion-in Temple

  • The head temple of the Jodo sect (founder: Honen Shonin).
    Numerous buildings in the temple are designated as national treasures or important cultural properties.
    The special private tour includes the Daihojo and Kohojo, which are usually closed to the public, the Sutra Repository, and the large bell tower famous for the New Year's bell,
    Then, a priest will take you to the inner sanctum area of the National Treasure, Mikageido, which is normally inaccessible.
    Visitors can also experience the tea ceremony at Hojo, and take their time to enjoy the Hojo Garden, a national scenic beauty spot.
